The 2022 midterm elections are on course to cost more than $16.7 billion, making them the most expensive in history, according to forecasts by the nonpartisan OpenSecrets group which tracks campaign spending.
Both sides have dropped enormous amounts of cash in an avalanche of TV advertising with control of Congress at stake.
As of Tuesday, Federal Election Commission data show that $7.1 billion had already been spent on federal elections – already a new record.
Latest polls suggest that Republicans are on course to take both the House and the Senate when voting ends on Tuesday.
Democrats hold both chambers and the battle for control has sent both sides into a spending frenzy.
Sheila Krumholz, executive director of OpenSecrets, said: ‘No other midterm election has seen as much money at the state and federal levels as the 2022 elections.
